Big Tech is spending $700 billion on AI data centers in 2026, but the infrastructure supercycle has collided with a fundamental constraint: the US power grid cannot scale as fast as the capex plans. By 2028, inference alone could consume between 165 and 326 terawatt-hours annually, according to projections cited by MIT Technology Review.
